Buying Guide

These are all the factors that you should consider while buying a budget DSLR camera for the money.

Sensor Size

Regarding the sensor size, you will see different sensors in DSLRs, interchangeable lens cameras, and point-and-shoot cameras, like ILC cameras come with image sensors. Similarly, the field of view is another part that should be discussed when discussing the sensor size. The thing is that the APS-C Sensor in DSLR cameras has a 1.5x crop factor, so the field of view that you will get with the DSLR and kit lens will be 35mm.

Similarly, micro four-thirds are the commonly used format in mirrorless cameras that comes with a 2x crop factor, and the field of view you get with this is 42mm, but they are older and are also becoming obsolete. Similarly, the APS-C sensor is smaller, whereas the mirrorless sensors are bigger than a smartphone.

At some point, you can also utilize the large sensors to control the field’s depth while taking images, which helps you make the subject look clear while making the background blurred ( bokeh effect ). So, people intentionally go after this nice and clean bokeh effect by using a combination of cameras and lenses. However, to understand it, you can think that the aperture value increases the blurred background value when more light falls on the lens. So, a lens with F1.4 will give you the best blurry effect compared with the F4 lens because the depth of field is more shallow.

A big sensor eliminates the image noise, another big advantage of a big sensor. When you get a camera with a 24MP APS-C sensor, you get larger pixels, which means sensitivity is higher than is measured in ISO that makes the images look natural with a greater sense of depth, which is why point-and-shoot cameras are not used commonly.

Choosing the right Camera

When buying a budget digital SLR camera, you should follow your instincts, feel comfortable in your hands, and be easy to use. So compared with mirrorless cameras, the DSLRs are perfect in size and build. This is because of the alignment of the components in the cameras, like the DSLRs have a centered viewfinder, while other cameras have EVF in the corner, so the handgrip gets smaller.

Getting an SLR-style mirrorless camera is also a great option when paired with a larger lens. The EVF is located in the center, so you can grip the lens to shoot comfortably. If you are a fan of smaller zoom or prime lenses, then you can also go with rangefinder-style cameras.

Regarding control, the button locations are different for different cameras, but you can get the best result with fast action when the cameras have joystick controls… Cameras like Fujifilm and Nikon series are equipped with dials to manage the shutter speed, which is handy for those photographers who always set the manual focus.

Too small or too big a camera isn’t going to make the whole photography journey comfortable, so be mindful when choosing a DSLR so that you can do shooting while having fun, not cursing the manufacturers.

Get the best viewfinder.

DSLR cameras come with an optical viewfinder the best compared to mirrorless cameras’ sports electronic viewfinders. The optical VF allows you to see through the lens because the optics direct light rays from different angles to your eyes. But, in the case of an electronic viewfinder, the image is generated digitally and shown on an OLED screen.

So, the OVF has a reading according to the f-stop of your lens, like when you use the Camera at F1.4; it will look brighter compared with an F4 zoom, giving you the perfect view of the world.

On the other end, the Electronic viewfinder gives you a real-time preview of the image you are going to record so that you can apply color filters; you will also see a live histogram and the related information on the screen. Information overlay adds more information to the display to help you capture the right picture.

You should also understand that viewfinders have different levels of quality, DSL; DSLRsequipped with pentamirror optical designs, a combination of optics and mirrors assembled to give you a clear view through the lens. Similarly, expensive DSLRs are equipped with a pentaprism viewfinder that also features a set of mirrors but gives you a bigger and brighter view of the image while framing.

Regarding electronic viewfinders, you only need to consider the magnification rating. An entry-level mirrorless camera is equipped with a larger viewfinder, and expensive pro-level mirrorless cameras have a much bigger viewfinder with larger magnification and dot resolution in millions of dots.

Continuous shooting and Autofocus speed

ILC cameras are not speedy; they suffer from a problem called shutter lag which is the time between the shutter press and the picture captured, which can take a long time to take a couple of photos. The best part is that DSLRs have little to no shutter lag or immeasurable shutter lag.

The unit to measure the continuous shooting is FPS, and the normal FPS for cheapest models is 5 frames per second while capturing. Still, recently many affordable units are coming with 11fps capture speed along with tracking as well as 30fps with a locked focus which is brilliant. Having such a camera will make you feel special about your investment because you can capture stunning photos of wildlife and sports where timing is everything.

With the increase of FPS, autofocus also increases, so when you get a basic DSLR, you will see few focus points in the center, but with an expensive DSLR, there will be a ton of focus points on the entire screen for wider focus coverage.

Conversely, mirrorless cameras depend on the image sensor to recognize the subject. They offer accurate subject tracking, face, and eye detection, making them suitable for bird and car photography.

Some advanced cameras by Sony and Canon are coming with stacked sensors, giving you the fastest possible speed of focus and capture to capture ultimate scenes, but that requires a budget of thousands of dollars which is why we are discussing the cheaper cameras in this article.

Live View and 4K video

The focus system determines the video recording of the Camera as well. DSLR requires you to press a button or tap the screen to change from OVF to LCD for capturing video, but mirrorless cameras don’t do that.

DSLRs capture footage using contrast focus so that you will experience slow and choppy focus during video recording. Canon uses Dual Pixel AF, a slower phase detection feature that turns pixels into two to get a smooth recording from the Camera.

Serious filmmakers need to look at other factors like a camera must have an in-built mic to capture audio along with the video. Plus, you want an image stabilization feature, 4K recording, and a color profile to take your shooting to the next levels.
